Humphrey the Hamster's New Home - RES Library
Upon returning to school from winter break, the students at Rogers Elementary School found a new friend in the learning lab. A hamster has joined the RES family! Students spent time in their individual classes brainstorming name ideas, and 8 were put to a vote the following week. Students participated in voting by bringing monetary donations to put in their favorite name. This vote raised over $200 for Foster Pet Outreach, a local, volunteer based foster program that helps animals in need find homes. The winning name? Humphrey! This name was submitted by Miss Jackson’s 5th grade class, inspired from the Humphrey the hamster book series.
Just recently, he traveled to Miss Malin’s room for hamster reading time, and has had special helpers from 4th and 5th grade to help clean his cage and feed him! Humphrey enjoys lots of naps, sunflower seeds, and long runs on his wheel. Humphrey was able to join our lab partially through a grant from Pets In The Classroom. This organization offers grants to teachers to add pets to the classroom. Pets are a great learning experience, and teach children about responsibility and ownership as well.
